About Our Pumpkins

Traditional Jack-o-Lantern Pumpkins & Heirlooms

At Diana’s Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze, we’re passionate about growing a beautiful selection of both heirloom varieties and classic Jack-O’-Lantern pumpkins.

Our son, Jimmy Madone, grows our extra-large Jack-O’-Lanterns here in Cañon City. This special variety is known for its impressive size and large, sturdy stems, and we are the only farm growing it in Southern Colorado. We also offer medium and small Jack-O’-Lanterns that are easier to carry.

For the 2026 season, our pumpkin field is resting as part of our crop-rotation plan. This means there will not be pumpkins growing on the vines to cut this year. Instead, freshly harvested pumpkins will be placed throughout the field for families to choose from. Cutting pumpkins directly from the vine is expected to return in 2028.

Our heirloom pumpkins are grown in limited quantities and are more sensitive to weather, insects, and disease. Because they are more challenging to grow, they may cost a little more than traditional orange pumpkins but well worth it.

Heirlooms are wonderful for decorating, but they are also delicious for cooking and baking. Each variety has its own flavor, and signs will provide descriptions and suggestions for how to use them.

Some of Our Heirloom Pumpkin Varieties

Blue Jarrahdale

Lovely and decorative, this pumpkin with stunning blue-green skin comes to us from the town of Jarrahdale in New Zealand.

Mild, slightly sweet, almost fruity, golden-yellow flesh thats highly aromatic and almost like a melon.

Mixed Gourds

Mixed gourds, inedible but very pretty.

Marina Di Chioggia Italian Heirloom

This squash surprisingly has a light yellow – to light orange flesh.

Peanut Pumpkin

Peanut pumpkin is more than edible; the flesh is sweet and delicious. These warty protuberances add up to an extremely sweet flesh, suitable for use in desserts such as pies, breads and cheesecakes.

Hubbard

The hubbard is consistently sweet, and can be substituted for virtually any other winter squash, making it ideal for cooking and baking.

Red Warty Thing Heirloom

Red Warty Thing Heirloom is a squash type pumpkin which has delicious flavor and fine texture.

Fairytale

Fairytale pumpkins are very heavy. These pumpkins are wonderful in pies & breads!

These are the pumpkins used for the breads we sell at Diana's Pumpkin Patch.

Rascal

Rascal is an orange fleshed, firm, heavy pumpkin that cooks like a squash. It doesn’t have that strong pumpkin flavor.

We like them for their color and that they keep until Easter!

Cinderella

French heirloom, Cinderella pumpkins are creamy and moist with a mild and slightly sweet flavor. Good for soups.

Heirloom Australian Jarrahdale

The orange flesh of the Heirloom Australian Jarrahdale is a stunning contrast to its bluish skin. The flesh is firm, and not stringy, best used to enhance savory dishes, it also makes a delicious pie pumpkin.

Speckled Hound Squash

Speckled Hound Squash is a hybrid winter squash variety with light orange flesh that is great for roasting, making soups, or baked treats.

Butternut Squash

Butternut squash in a pumpkin shape. Very tasty baked.
